Language Map

The Modern Language Association Language Map
A Map of Languages in the United States

The MLA Language Map is intended for use by students, teachers, and anyone interested in learning about the linguistic and cultural composition of the United States. The MLA Language Map uses data from the 2000 United States census to display the locations and numbers of speakers of thirty languages and three groups of less commonly spoken languages in the United States. The census data are based on responses to the question, "Does this person speak a language other than English at home?"

Find SciFinder from the library home page orange button - ARTICLES AND DATABASES - then under 'S' in the alphabetical list. You must create an account with SciFinder using your UTD email.

Artstor Database

Have you used ARTSTOR yet?
Artstor is a visual database that contains over 500,000 pictures, paintings, sculpture, photographs, architectural drawings, and designs. Derived from the artistic traditions of many eras and cultures, this material comes from museums, libraries, photographic archives, publishers, slide libraries, and individual scholars. You can use these materials in your research papers or power point presentations.
ARTstor User Services staff provides regularly scheduled online training sessions for three topics: Introduction to ARTstor; Presenting with ARTstor; or Teaching with ARTstor. These hour-long sessions are held using GoToWebinar and are offered free of charge to all ARTstor users. To view the upcoming schedule and to register for sessions, see the online training. ARTstor in 3 Minutes instructional video demonstrations are also available. The video series offers quick, three-minute or less overviews of ARTstor features such as: how to register for an account, how to download images to PowerPoint, and how to make image groups. The video series is also available on YouTube and TeacherTube (search for 'ARTstor').

Medpedia

Collaborative Online Medical Encyclopedia Goes Live
Medpedia, a new online medical encyclopedia relying on user-generated content from anyone with an M.D. or a Ph.D. in a biomedical field, officially became available today. The venture, which has the backing of numerous leading medical schools, was explored in an earlier Chronicle article that takes a detailed look at issues for contributors and users of the site. --David Shieh

As with all collaborative sites, you need to evaluate the articles. I found several grammatical errors in the first article that I read!

Art Databases

The library has recently added Oxford Art Online to its collection of art databases. Oxford Art Online contains Grove Art Online and other collections.

Derived from the artistic traditions of many eras and cultures, this material comes from museums, libraries, photographic archives, publishers, slide libraries, and individual scholars. Oxford Art Online The new home of Grove Art Online, the Oxford Art Online database contains electronic versions of the Oxford Companion to Western Art, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Term. The Oxford Art Online database also offers thousands of images from ARTstor, the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Images for College Teaching, Art Resource, Artists Rights Society, and numerous international art galleries and artists. You may use the artwork from these databases in your power points, presentations and research papers. They add interest, color, and many times count as primary documents.
